Tan believes it is important to accept her "Mother Tongue" because its a story explaining her experiences with her mom and how her mom has gotten better at speaking English, but she's always met with a dilemma because sometimes other people don't understand what she's saying or bilingual of how she speaks and communicates in English. I think its not just how her mother communicates in English but its shows her mother's history, culture, and how far she has came in converting her language and her way of living; It also shows her progress with speaking English as a whole without having anyone to really teach her as if they were an actual teacher.
